The First Science Fiction Film
Le Voyage dans la Lune / A Trip To The Moon (1902)
French magician and filmmaker Georges Méliès was one of the first to experiment with the then new art medium of film and Le Voyage dans La Lune is possibly his most popular creation out of the 500 movies he did. The film, which runs for about 15 minutes, tells the story of the trip of some astronomers to the moon using a space capsule that looks like a bullet. They successfully land on the moon but are taken prisoners by the Selentines (alien inhabitants of the Moon). One of the astronomers manages to eliminate the king of the Selentines and all of the astronomers escape and leave the Moon using the same capsule.
